The game was removed amid the financial troubles and rapid closure of Telltale Games in the Fall of 2018.
On Wii, if it had not been removed in late November it became unattainable when the Nintendo Wii Shop Channel was shut down on January 30th, 2019. The game was removed from GOG.com n January 29, 2019. It remained available on PlayStation 3 for a time, possibly being delisted by the end of 2018. Tales of Monkey Island was delisted from Steam on November 14th, 2018 when its price was set to $0.00 making it unavailable to purchase. The game is not expected to return to sale on PlayStation 3. On Steam, the game is only available as a package which includes all five episodes that were originally sold separately. Like other Telltale Games titles that have returned to sale, Monkey Island is now published by Athlon Games with the developer listed as LCG Entertainment. Tales of Monkey Island returned to sale on Steam and GOG.com on June 25th, 2020. There are jump scares here, and instead, the game relies on its well-crafted narrative and excellent environmental storytelling to build up tension and a sense of dread. The Building 71 Incident is not like your typical horror adventure game. Also, there are no objectives to be met during your gameplay as the story is the main focus of The Building 71 Incident. There are plenty of interactable objects in it, but they are meant more as tools to be used to push the narrative forward. Now, given that it's an exploration game, don't go into it expecting some kind of action-oriented gameplay. It relies on its clever narration and environmental storytelling to provide a tense situation with an ever-growing sense of dread as you move from one location to the next.

The unknown employee was eventually declared missing by the police. One unnamed employee decides to investigate these events and record them all on his VHS recorder.
